II – Types of cookies

There are different ways to classify the cookies, and the same cookie can receive different classifications, depending on how they are created and used. Please note that these categories are not always standard, and other sites may use different classifications.
1 – According the duration of the cookie.
a)Session cookies – They last only during a browsing session, and expire when the user closes the browser window. It’s used, by instance, to remember what a user has put in their shopping basket. They are considered less intrusive than other types of cookies.
b)Persistent cookies – They are stored on a users’ device in between browser sessions , and can last for an indefinite number of days, set by the Web site that creates the cookie. It can be used to remember user preferences for future visits or for targeted
advertising, for example. The intrusiveness of this type of cookies depend on if it’s used by the same site or a third party, and what it is used for.2 – According the cookie origin
a) First party cookies – When the web site who sets the
cookie is the same that the user is visiting .
b) Third party cookies – When the cookie is placed by other Web site than the one being visited, that collects the information to provide visitors with their own services or track users in the host site.3 – According the the cookie usage
a)Technical cookies – Allow the user to navigate through a site and use any of its existing options or services, for example, control traffic and data communication, identify the session, restrict access to some pages, remember the elements of an order,
make the buying process of an order, use a personal members’ area, use the security features while browsing, content storage for videos or electronic sound or share content via social networks. Some of these cookies are considered “strictly necessary
cookies”, because it would be impossible to use the site without them.
b) Personalization Cookies – allow users to customize the operation of a web site (eg, languages, styles, browser, etc).
c) Analytical cookies – Monitor the behavior of users on a website,
and create statistics that can be used to tailor information to them, in order to improve services and content.
d) Advertising Cookies – Allow the effective management of advertising space offered by the site.
e) Targeting cookies – Store information of
the users’ behavior through the continuous observation of their browsing habits, sometime across multiple sites. They’re usually placed by third-party sites that offer some kind of service in return. A classical example are the “social buttons” that allow
the interaction of a site with social networks like Facebook, Google Plus or twitter.
