Why is Caen so important in World War II

During World War II, Caen suffered extensive bombing because of its location near the D-Day landing beaches and its importance as a German stronghold in Normandy. After D-Day, Allied forces focused on capturing the city to break German resistance and advance inland. Caen became amajor battleground during the Battle of Normandy in 1944. Occupied by German troops, it was fiercely contested for weeks. Much of the city was destroyed, then rebuilt in the postwar years. Today, Caen stands as a symbol of resilience and peace. The Mémorial de Caen honors the memory of the conflict and promotes reconciliation.
