Chamonix is a city of the department of Haute Savoie located at 1035 meters above sea level. It is a very famous city in France because it is there that there is the Mont Blanc 🏔 . Many tourists come to Chamonix to go skiing or mountaineering with a view of the Mont Blanc. The more adventurous can even try to climb to its summit. For the less athletic, it is also possible to take a cable car to the top of the aiguille du midi. Once you arrive at the top, you will be at an altitude of 3842 meters.
The magnificent view on the valley will amaze you for sure! You can enjoy this view by tasting a delicious tartiflette, a typical Savoyard dish, at the restaurant “Le 3842” located just at the exit of the cable car.
But the city of Chamonix has other assets. If you like flowers, you will be delighted. Indeed, it is one of the most flowered cities in France. Imagine how pleasant it would be to stroll through the streets of Chamonix smelling the sweet scent of flowers. Also, Chamonix is famous for being the first city to host the Olympic Games in history, it was in 1924. Chamonix has not finished surprising us.
The first building in the town was built in 1091 by monks from the abbey of Saint-Michel-de-la-Cluse in Italy. At first, there was only a mill and a farm. Then in the 12th century, the monks built a monastery in Chamonix. In 1770, the town developed considerably because there were many tourists who wanted to see Mont Blanc. They even built an inn to accommodate the visitors. Now there are more than 8,000 inhabitants in Chamonix and every winter tourists from all over the world come to visit the town.
