Why Is Pride Month in June?

The reason goes back to June 1969, when the Stonewall riots in New York changed history. After a police raid at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, the LGBTQ+ community stood up against years of oppression.

This spontaneous act of resistance sparked days of protest, and became the birth of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Exactly one year later, in June 1970, the first Pride marches took place in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago to commemorate the Stonewall uprising. That’s why Pride Month is celebrated in June every year : to honor those who fought for visibility and equality.
