The Christmas Market (Le Marché de Noël)

Hi friends 👋

To learn French language in immersion, I propose you to discover the French culture thanks to a publication about an emblematic place in France with the description in French.

Today, I chose to introduce you to the iconic Christmas market in the city of Strasbourg ⛪🎅🎄.

The Christmas Market (Le Marché de Noël)

✨It is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe, dating back to 1570!✨

It is called the Christkindelsmärik, or “Market of the Infant Jesus,” in Alsatian. This iconic market takes place every year in Strasbourg, which is known as the capital of Christmas.

The origin of this market comes from the Protestant tradition. Pastor Johannes Flinner deemed the tradition of Saint Nicholas (on December 6th) too “papist” and wanted gifts 🎁 to be given to children by the Infant Jesus 👼 instead. Thus, merchants were authorized to sell toys to children from the beginning of December until the birth of Jesus on December 25th 🎄.

Today, the Strasbourg Christmas Market spans the entire city. The famous Place Broglie and Place de la Cathédrale host numerous wooden chalets where artisans and vendors offer local products, traditional decorations, and delicious treats.

Highlights include bredele (small Alsatian cookies), spiced mulled wine, and unique handcrafted items that showcase regional craftsmanship. Every year, a giant Christmas tree, the symbol of the festivities, is erected in Place Kléber, bathing the city in a magical glow.

A commitment to sustainability♻️. In recent years, Strasbourg has prioritized making its market eco-friendly. The lights are energy-efficient, and vendors are encouraged to use recyclable materials to minimize environmental impact.

With its performances, concerts, and solidarity village, the Christkindelsmärik attracts nearly two million visitors from around the world each year, eager to experience the magic of Christmas in a captivating setting.

Whether you’re looking for a unique souvenir, a culinary adventure, or simply a moment of togetherness, the Strasbourg Christmas Market is an unmissable destination to celebrate the holidays!
