When Should You Use “Tu” or “Vous” in French?

You walk into a small shop in France. The owner smiles and says Bonjour. You want to ask a question… but suddenly, you hesitate.

Should you say tu or vous?

Both words mean “you” in English, but choosing between them is about more than grammar. It also tells the other person something about your relationship.

Here is how to make the right choice without worrying too much about making a mistake.

What is the difference between tu and vous?

“Tu” is used when speaking informally to one person. You will commonly hear it between friends, family members, children and people who know each other well.

“Vous” has two different uses. It is used to speak formally or politely to one person, but it is also the plural “you” when speaking to two or more people.

For example:

Tu habites à Paris ?

→ Do you live in Paris? : informal, one person

Vous habitez à Paris ?

→ Do you live in Paris? : formal/polite, one person OR several people

So, “vous” does not always mean that a conversation is formal!

When should you use “vous” in French?

When meeting an adult for the first time, “vous” is usually the safest choice.

You will commonly hear it when speaking to someone you do not know, in shops and restaurants, and in more formal or professional situations.

For example, you might say:

Excusez-moi, vous pouvez m’aider ?

→ Excuse me, can you help me?

Using “vous” does not necessarily create distance. In many situations, it is simply a way of being polite.

When can you use “tu” in French?

You will usually use “tu” with friends, family members and children.

However, French speakers also use “tu” with many adults in relaxed social situations, particularly once a relationship has become more familiar.

This is where things become less black and white. Age, context, personality and even workplace culture can influence the choice.

And sometimes, a French person will simply invite you to use “tu”.

Vous pouvez me tutoyer.

→ You can use “tu” with me.

Or you can ask:

On peut se tutoyer ?

→ Can we use “tu” with each other?

The verb tutoyer means “to address someone using tu”.

Its opposite, vouvoyer, means to address someone using “vous”.

What should you do when you are not sure?

Here is the easiest rule to remember:

👉 When in doubt, start with “vous”.

If the other person prefers “tu”, they can suggest it. Moving from “vous” to “tu” is perfectly normal as people get to know each other.

And don’t panic if you choose the wrong one. Most French speakers understand that learners are still discovering these social codes.

In fact, learning when to use “tu” or “vous” becomes much easier when you hear these interactions in real life.
